}} 弗洛伊德的精神分析理論將人的心理結構的分為三個部分，即潛意識，前意識和意識。意識是人直接感知的心理。潛意識是個人的原始衝動和本能欲望，但受社會倫理和法律的約束被壓抑，無法意識到。前意識則是可召回的潛意識，經有意注意和努力可轉為意識。

潛意識雖在意識之下，但其不停的在暗中活動，從深層支配着人的整個心理和行為，成為人的一切動機和意圖的源泉。1923 年，弗洛伊德發表《自我與本我》一書，進一步完善了他的潛意識理論，關於意識、前意識、潛意識的心理結構也被表述為本我、自我、超我組成的人格結構。
