结构

以下是或为曾被考虑列入边缘系统内的结构：

在大脑皮层的结构:

• 扣带回：调整心跳、血压，以及处理认知及注意力的自律功能。<ref name=normandy/><ref name=stanford/><ref name=biology/>
• 眶额皮质：对决策甚为必要。

在大脑皮层下的结构:

  • 海马旁回：以形成空间记忆为主，并为海马体的一部分。<ref name=stanford/>

• 穹隆：把讯号由海马体传至乳头状体及中隔内核。<ref name=biology/><ref name=normandy/>

• 下丘脑（Hypothalamus）：经由激素的产生及释放，使自律神经系统变得规律。影响及调整心跳、血压、饥饿、口渴、性刺激以及睡眠节率。<ref name=normandy/><ref name=biology/>
• 脑下垂体（Pituitary Gland）：分泌荷尔蒙并调整体内平衡。<ref name=normandy/>

此外，以下结构偶尔亦会视为边缘系统的一部分：

• 齿状回：被认为是建设新记忆及调整快乐的因素。<ref name=stanford/>
• 内鼻皮质及梨状皮质：在嗅觉系统中接收气味投入。<ref name=biology/>
• 穹窿回：包围着扣带回、海马体及海马旁回的范围。
• 嗅球：负责嗅觉感觉的输入。
