加德纳认为，每一个人都赋有这八种智能，分别在于每个人在各种智能范畴中都有其强项及弱项，而他相信每种智能，都可以透过持续的学习或训练，从而到达一定的水平。当一个人在某一个范畴有超越一般人的表现，广义上可介定为“资优”；反之，若在某一个范畴的表现被一般人为落后，广义上亦可介定为“稍逊”，需要通过不同的方式去强化基本能力，或者引导学习者以其强项去补缺本身的弱项部分。加德纳还特别强调，强化学习者较弱的范畴，是通过正面的方式去处理，而非传统上采用责罚的方式去为难学习者。

包括口头语言运用及文字书写的能力，把句法、音韵学、语义学、语言实用学结合并运用自如。这类人在学习时是用语言及文字来思考，喜欢文字游戏、阅读、讨论和写作。

空间智能[编辑 | 编辑源代码]

空间智能强的人对于色彩、线条、形状、形式、空间及它们之间关系的敏感性很高，能准确地感觉视觉空间，并把所知觉到的表现出来。这类人在学习时是用意象及图像来思考的。

空间智能可以划分为形象的空间智能和抽象的空间智能两种能力。形象的空间智能为画家的特长。抽象的空间智能为几何学家特长。建筑学家形象和抽象的空间智能都擅长。

逻辑数理智能[编辑 | 编辑源代码]

从事与数字有关工作的人特别需要这种有效运用数字和推理的智能。他们学习时靠推理来进行思考，喜欢提出问题并执行实验以寻求答案，寻找事物的规律及逻辑顺序，对科学的新发展有兴趣。即使他人的言谈及行为也成了他们寻找逻辑缺陷的好地方，对可被测量、归类、分析的事物比较容易接受。

肢体动觉智能[编辑 | 编辑源代码]

善于运用整个身体来表达想法和感觉，以及运用双手灵巧地生产或改造事物的能力。这类人很难长时间坐着不动，喜欢动手建造东西，喜欢户外活动，与人谈话时常用手势或其他肢体语言。他们学习时是透过身体感觉来思考。

音乐智能强的人能察觉、辨别、改变和表达音乐，对节奏、音调、旋律或音色较具敏感性。在学习时是透过节奏旋律来思考。

人际关系智能[编辑 | 编辑源代码]

这类人对人的脸部表情、声音和动作较具敏感性，能察觉并区分他人的情绪、意向、动机及感觉。他们比较喜欢参与团体性质的活动，较愿意找别人帮忙或教人如何做事，在人群中才感到舒服自在。他们通常是团体中的领导者，靠他人的回馈来思考。例如：卡内基、黑幼龙、罗斯福。

内省智能强的人能自我了解，意识到自己内在情绪、意向、动机、脾气和欲求，以及自律、自知和自尊的能力。他们会从各种回馈管道中了解自己的优劣，常静思以规划自己的人生目标，爱独处，以深入自我的方式来思考。

内省智能可以划分两个长层次：事件层次和价值层次。事件层次的内省，指向对于事件成败的总结。价值层次的内省，将事件的成败和价值观联系起来自审。

能认识植物、动物和其他自然环境（如云和石头）的能力。自然智能强的人，在打猎、耕作、生物科学上的表现较为突出。

自然智能应当进一步归结为探索智能。包括对于社会的探索和对于自然的探索两个方面。

过去的多元智能发展主要集中在幼儿园，因为教育专家及官员认为，培养学生的多元智能发展应该由小做起，并慢慢推广至其他层面。然而，广义来说，多元智能理论的框架不单能在小学及幼稚园的层面推广，在中学、大学、甚至研究院或在职培训也是合适。在华人地区已有教育组织陆续将多元智能理论推广及实践于幼稚园、小学、中学、大学、研究院/所、企业等层面。近年不少国际MBA的课程都加入了创意思维的课程，以加强学生在新时代的适应力和创意方面的开发。这正正就是加德纳所提出的多元智能的其中一个范畴。

由于多元智能理论有助老师从学生的智能分布去更了解学生，中小学通常将理论用于两方面：

  1. 可以利用多元智能理论来发掘资优学生，并进而为他们提供合适的发展机会，使他们茁壮成长；
  2. 可以利用多元智能理论来扶助有问题的学生，并采取对他们更合适的方法去学习。香港现时有几家中学，容许部分语文能力较低的学生利用录像来交功课。

然而，每个孩子都有独特的天赋，每一位学生都需要伯乐。于华人地区之教育组织及教育工作者应用多元智能理论，应扩及各层面的学校老师和教授及学生家长，运用实务且生活化的多元智能观念来了解每一位学生，透过陪伴、观察、多元智能测验评量及经设计的智能课程活动等方式，发现每一位学生的优势智能和天赋，继而运用多元智能教学法因材施教，锻炼并提升每一位学生的多元智能表现，辅导学生根据自己的优势智能有效学习、探索生涯发展方向（例如科系及职业），据以实践西方之多元智能理论及东方因材施教之教育理念。
